Cancer Super Full Moon - “Wisdom Is An Open State of Being”

If the first lunation of 2026 sets the tone for the new calendar year, then buckle up for a wild ride. This out-of-bounds Super Full Moon in its home sign of Cancer conjoins with Jupiter and the fixed star Sirius, and coincides with perihelion - a rare convergence of potent cosmic events.
I’ll break down the astro-details, but the gist is: As we start the new year, this Full Moon helps you FEEL into what you want to create, discern which intentions are in alignment with your divine mission and deep soul self, and open to previously unforeseen possibilities for your future. In the context of the Great Dissolution - Saturn and Neptune at the end of Pisces - this Full Moon also reveals old patterns that are ripe for healing, resolution and completion.
A Super Full Moon occurs when the Moon’s perigee - closest proximity to Earth - coincides with the Full Moon. The Moon appears bigger and brighter than usual, and its effect is also super-sized, stirring up strong feelings and revelations. We’ve had a series of consecutive Super Full Moons, and this will be the fourth and final (for now).
The Moon in its home sign of watery Cancer adds to its potency - and to the heightened sensitivity and vulnerability. The Moon’s proximity to Jupiter, also in Cancer, further amplifies its emotional power, and activates Jupiter’s ongoing square to Chiron, which stations just before the Full Moon.
Translation? Healing continues to be a headlining theme, as early childhood, family and ancestral wounding gets triggered. In the body, Cancer correlates to your soft underbelly - the chest, breasts, stomach and womb. When in fear, the Cancer part of you can put up a defensive shell of self-protection, hardening the heart and shutting down the flow of feelings.
But Chiron says, “the only way out is through,” and healing only happens when you have the courage to feel ALL the feelings. This Full Moon is calling for a soft and open heart, a willingness to share the raw vulnerability of your humanness as the path to healing, empowerment, and to deeper intimacy with self and others.
The Moon’s conjunction with Sirius - the brightest star and “Spiritual Sun” - invites greater intimacy with your stellar or galactic self. As we enter a year of fast-paced change and radical new realities coming into form, as we confront the great mystery of what this new world is going to look like, the Full Moon wants to bring you into alignment with your higher purpose, the essence of who you are as a spiritual being and the wisdom you came here to embody.
While the Moon activates the “Spiritual Sun,” the Sun itself is extra-potent; perihelion - when the earth is closest to the Sun - also occurs on January 3rd. The Full Moon coincides with perihelion only every 19 years.
The Sun represents your hero’s/heroine’s journey, the light of your true self, your unique expression of Source consciousness. Make the most of this rare power time by going outside when the Sun sets and the Moon rises, and open your heart to receive guidance and inspiration for living your divine mission on earth.
Out-of-bounds planets are wild cards, tricksters who rebel against the status quo and inspire novelty and innovation. A planet is out-of-bounds when it goes rogue, far north or south of the path of the Sun. At the Full Moon, not only the Moon but all three inner planets - Mercury, Venus and Mars - are out-of-bounds. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a chart with four out-of-bounds planets!
The out-of-bounds-ness of this lunation alerts us that this is not your typical Capricorn season, or Full Moon! This is a time to stretch beyond your fears and limitations, to break free from old emotional patterns, to get creative in your relationships, to honor the truth of your deepest desires and values, to be willing to be the “weirdo” and share your unique genius. Watch out for boundary violations - out-of-bounds planets caution you to stay in your own lane rather than intruding on someone else’s territory.
This Full Moon calls you into your older, wiser self - the wisdom of presence, patience, acceptance and allowance, rather than fear, contraction and judgment. The wisdom of heart-knowing rather than analysis paralysis and anxiety. “Come out of a focus in the mental realms and simplify in the heart” (Ariel Spilsbury). Keep the long view and bigger picture in mind as you harness the power of your imagination and dream into the highest potentials for 2026.
